Miniatures

This guy looks like Patrick Stewart: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14069_G
I want this horrible monster: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14076_G
There aren’t enough female miniatures (specifically gnomes, halflings and dwarves): http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14082_G
I like this pose: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14093_G and the guy who sculpted has a name that sounds German for One O’Clock. Maybe that’s when he was born.
The only way this miniature could be better would be if the other hand had a whip and the character was female: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14043_G
One of the coolest wizards I’ve seen: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14060_G
I would have got this http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14031_color for Deanna’s character if it wasn’t way too big.
Nice paint job on this sorceress http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14001_color
Perfect miniature for a Freeport campaign: http://www.reapermini.com/gallery/warlord/14084_G

Fine. I’ll do it.

According to OKcupid.com, I am “the loverboy.”
I am excited about embodying the German principle of Konstantzusammenschaft.

Fowa suppa, I er uh…want a pahty plattah!

I wish Big Trouble in Little China was a better movie. It has its moments, but it could be better. Anghold convinced me to come to Goquitlam for a sleepover last night. I did, but I brought all my drawing stuff (well not all of it) with me. She went to part of Yvonne’s birthday celebration night, which I regret missing (especially the bowling part), but paid the price for eating at the Buddhist vegetarian restaurant (this only became evident at 4 in the morning, while I was sound asleep. Also sight asleep). We made salsa & guacamole & vegetable platters for some other thing she’s going to tonight. And I watched the last half of Star Trek: The Motion Picture on Space (non-Canadian readers: it’s our version of the Sci Fi Network). They said something in the movie like “it’s what they used to call black holes” which took me aback, as I’m quite certain they reference black holes in later Star Trek canon. There were also a few things about the movie that struck me as odd, but I guess that goes for everyone, no?

So I have to tell you all about Mac’s coffee services. But first I have to tell you how I found out about it/them. I went on a date with this gal I met on one of them thar online dating services. She’s nice and everything and is enthusiastic which is always nice, but it’s come to my attention that we have nothing in common. Also she does a lot of drugs, which contrary to popular belief, is not cool. So I probably won’t be seeing her again. But on our second (and last) date, I was thirsty and Mac’s was nearby. You know Mac’s: the 24 hour convenience store that is like a more pleasant version of 7-11. I was just going to get a Stewart’s cream soda but I noticed that in Mac’s they have 6 different kinds of syrups (like those you get at Starbucks for 60 cents a shot or whatever) to put in your coffee for free. I don’t know how the coffee itself tastes, but I wasn’t going to pass on the opportunity to try out a small hot chocolate with shots of all 6 of the flavours (except the irish cream which they ran out of). Well it was easily the best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life. When Ang & I drove by another Mac’s last night, I repeated the sensation. So next time you’re near a Mac’s check that out.

Who made lentil dahl yesterday? I made lentil dahl yesterday. For obvious reasons.

Ummmm yeah.

On an unrelated note: We had a virtual meeting of the Vancouver Gaming Guild movers and shakers today. It looks like Con Fu may be a 3-day con, but that is not confirmed yet. As USUAL, a certain PERSON who KNOWS WHO HE IS couldn’t resist going “whoop whoop!” before an official announcement is made. Not that it makes any difference.

Okay so here’s a story that I’ve been meaning to write down, blog-wise. I hope I haven’t already done so.

I was walking down 4th Ave probably 2 weeks ago. But wait – there’s more! Now, you can imagine that there are other people on the sidewalk, as there is wont to be on a typical city street like 4th Ave. And you will also know what it’s like to do the little dance where you walk up to someone who is coming right at you, and there is that moment of indecision, on both parts, as to who will go left and who will go right. Happens all the time, and it’s pretty much consistent that the worst it can play out is that the two of you will stop walking before you collide, and make some kind of mutual arrangement in the span of a second or so. Well, I’ve always imagined a situation where two people walk up to their exact counterparts and they can never pass eachother, because they each step towards the road, then step towards the storefronts, then step back, then cross their arms, then try again – forever in tandem and unable to pass one another like a man and his reflection. Sounds like a Chinese folk tale. Anyway, back to 4th Ave. There I was walking down the sidewalk (possibly minding my own business but I can’t remember, I might have been minding your business) and there was a couple approaching me – a guy probably in his late 20’s, and a girl about the same age. When I walked towards them I veered left, away from the girl and around the guy (I’ll call him Awnjdv) so that they would stick together as we passed. Awnjdv on the other hand, he veered right, away from the girl as well. So here we were veering away from the girl and both towards one another. I knew if I kept veering towards the street he would stop doing likewise because he was just getting farther and farther away from the girl. I mean, how often when you’re with a friend do you make room for strangers between you over making room by scooching close together? Common sense, right? Well, I was wrong because we (me and Awnjdv) finally and resolutely slammed together with our chests and shoulders. Now me, being me, found no small amount of joy in the comical slapstickiness of it all. I managed to get a “sorry” out as I laughed and moved on. Awnjdv, on the other hand, yelled “FUCK!”* rather loudly as he kept on walking. So, I hereby deem him to be Asshole-With-No-Joie-De-Vivre (AWNJDV).

*possibly more but that’s all I was able to make out clearly.

So, do I have this straight? Lentils and peas are the same thing?

Kaba Kick is Russian roullette…for kids!

And that’s…one to grow on.

I’ve got a virus on my computer and it’s cagey prey. “worm mydoom.a” it seems to be. Two virus checkers have been able to detect it, but neither of them can do anything aboot it. The file is in a directory that I can’t seem to access and ends in .CPY. Any suggestions?

Look at me, all not working and stuff. I went downtown today and I ate a two dollar hotdog at the corner of Georgia and Granville. You know the guy – right outside the new London Drugs there. It was worth the $2 – and he had 4 kinds of mustard including cranberry-mustard. And sauerkraut. I’m not sure if that’s the correct spelling but I’m going with it. Sometimes I like to eat things that I normally just don’t. It’s been a long time since I had a hot dog. I also got two Dungeon magazines at Golden Age collectibles for 99 cents each (they’re normally ten bucks) so I’m pretty happy about that. One of them has “dungeon dressing” cut and fold-outs: columns; throne; pedestals – that kind of stuff. That in itself is kind of cool. One the reverse side of every Dungeon Magazine (for those of you who don’t know – there are two magazines that go with D&D – Dungeon (which is full of ready-made adventures) and Dragon (which is everything else – new monsters, spells, etc) is “Polyhedron” magazine. Polyhedron publishes little mini-games using the D&D rules. One of these new mags has a game called Hijinx a “mini-game of animated pop adventure.” Think Josie & the Pussycats, Jem & the Holograms, Jabberjaws and (if they were in a band) Scooby Doo. I would like to play that game. But, as it is, I quit my semi-monthly game of Mutants & Masterminds for a while. Just too much other stuff going on. Plus it’s in that zone where it’s too far to walk but too close to actually read any meaningful part of a book during the bus ride? You know how it is. So that doesn’t help. FOR OBVIOUS REASONS

PALM Alert! The origami meeting this month is on the 28th – and for a change I have no prior commitments! Who wants to come fold paper?

Another day with no work done.

Today I met Janet, at long last! Marlo and Janet and I went for dinner (takeout) at Falafel Magic where there was kind of some uncomfortable mojo going on, involving an old lady giving dirty looks and the guy behind the counter yelling out “NEXT PLEASE” when it was quite obvious that the “next” person was right there and ready to order. Then we went to my place and we all chatted merrily as we ate. We watched a couple of Mystery Science Theater 3000 shorts and as a result, when we watched Fritz Lang’s Metropolis we MST3K’d it up quite a bit, made only worse by the fact that it is a silent film. It was a hilarious and fun night and we vow to have an MST3K viewing soon. Now, verily, I am inspired to list the episodes available, for obvious reasons:

MST3K: The Movie (This Island Earth) – my favourite.
Time of the Apes
Mighty Jack
Danger: Diabolik
Gamera VS Guiron
Night of the Blood Beast
Rocketship X-M (my second favourite)
Manos: Hands of Fate
Egah!
Gunslinger
Mitchell
Laserblast (a good one)
I Accuse My Parents (another good one)
Atomic Brain
Giant Spider Invasion
Werewolf
and 6-8 others.

What kind of an idiot do they take me for?

So, how was the Superbowl this weekend? Like I care. Painting miniatures was fun and productive. I got 4 done including 2 newly purchased grimlocks, Aili’s halfling rogue, and a grick. The grick turned out the best, and was the last one I did. I also started a slave girl for Spaceship Zero but only got half way done (if that). James and Denzil and Chris Gibbons and Anghold and Stephen Danic and of course Stewie were present. I was hoping Jamie would show up but he failed me again for the last time. I won’t type out the details of who brought what food because that’s the sort of thing I find boring when it doesn’t directly affect me, so consider that a favour from me to you, the reader.

And then Stewie sat on the couch and straightened up as he obviously sat on something, reached around and pulled out my new spikey flail which he looked at for a moment with a blank expression on his face that made me laugh, laugh, laugh.

Oh and Liam and I worked on our RPG today. It was good! We are going with a sci-fi/fantasy amalgam involving a tense cease fire between the nation of elves and the nation of robots. We got a hit location chart worked out that I’m pretty excited about. We came up with four stats: Strength; Dexterity (Agility?); Mind; Power. I think that’s all you need to know at this time. We had the meeting at Drexoll Games and when other people came into the store to play Legend of the Five Rings (it’s a card game) Liam became astonishingly distracted. So next week we’ll meet here at my place.

Stephane has put up a “Dealios” web page for really good daily deals around town. Look at it at http://www.chumpchange.ca/dealios/dealios.html and send suggestions to dealios@chumpchange.ca

This just gave me an idea that will probably burn out pretty fast: Toren’s Buddy Profiles!!!

First buddy profile: Stephane Dubuc

Stephane is from Manitoba. I have known him for several years. I met him online somehow (I don’t remember the exact details), like many of my friends, because he was interested in Spider-Man cartoons. We share many interests, but mostly cartoons. He was making a CD of the music on the old 1960’s Spidey cartoons (which is great, by the way) and I had some episodes he didn’t, and vice versa. This was before they started running the episodes on Teletoon. Stephane is helping me to make a Thickets DVD. You will have seen him at any of my Saturday morning cartoon parties and birthday auctions. He has a camper van. He loves the barter system. He sneaks into movies. He is a mystery shopper. He’s a fantastic photographer. He plays piano. He has 2 cats, Brown and Grey. He’s dating Sheri, and they’re moving into a new place together this month. I don’t know how old he is. He looks like this http://www.chumpchange.ca/gallery/film144.html
