Rockonomics: The Fifth Album

Back when I thought that the Shadow Out of Tim narrative would just be a few songs on the latest album, and not the entire thing, my best idea for the album name was Supercthonic. Warren pooh-poohed it as sounding too ‘lispy’ but Mario thinks it’s great. I hold out hope that the fifth album will harbor that name, unless something better comes up.

The forthcoming album, which may be out in 2008 and may not be, will mostly be a miscellany, not like the last two concept albums. I thought I’d share some of the song ideas I have. If you’re going to steal them for your own nerd rock band, please stop reading.

I want to do a song about Vigo the Carpathian, the villain from Ghostbusters 2. Someone suggested on a website somewhere (Stewie?) about how Vigo’s monologue would be the perfect beginning to a metal album, and I agree. If we do that, we have to figure out the legal ramifications as Sony is not known for being generous with its properties.

An anthem to the “living fossil” coelacanth, called “Coelacanthem”

A tribute to Lovecraft’s tale “The Music of Erich Zann” – something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but never had access to a violinist. Anyone know any rockin’ ones?

A re-imagining of one of our old songs. Maybe “Shoggoths Away,” “House of Clocks,” or maybe even “Three Hour Log.”

How Do You Get To Carnegie Hall?

Practice, man, practice.

I am having a hell of a time getting past the guitar solo in Judas Priest “Electric Eye” on Guitar Hero Rocks the ’80s.

But in real music history today, I went to practice in Chilliwack at Mountain of Madness Studios. We’re working out how to perform a couple of the songs off the new album in a live in-your-face environment. Songs like “Return to Melanesia” and “Ride the Flying Polyp.” Also we’re working on costumes. Old timey diving suits and melanesian grass skirts, to be precise.

Additionally, Postmark Media may be coming to record our entire show. We may offer the show on compact disc, or we may save it for some secret special future project. Which means I better start memorizing lyrics.

Noodle Your Way To My Heart

Presently I’m going through my old magnetic tape media in anticipation of the move. Deciding which VHS tapes I can do without, and also going through old audio cassettes. I have scores of old Thickets song germs. For fans of the band who may be reading this, I thought you might enjoy hearing one of them. Usually what happens with our songs is somebody will bring an idea to the jam room and we’ll just play it over and over, adding and subtracting until we have something we like. In this case, Bob had a proto-song which he played for me and I taped it. Parts of this song eventually became “Burrow Your Way to My Heart.”

And if you’re wondering whether it’s worth picking up, let me show you some of the feedback I’ve got so far:

I received my order today. If you could hand out high fives to the rest of the band, then stand in front of the mirror and give yourself one, I’d be grateful. You guys have really outdone yourself with this album.

Wowsers! Very pleased with the new album! It rocks in a new and old skool thickety way…and worth the wait! Fave track…#7 [Cultists On Board]… and Nyarlathotep. But they’re ALL fab. I’ve found myself humming and whistling away all day in a thickety way… And kudos on your a capella track. Love it. Your voice is improving…less strain is evident…sounds nearly effortless.

I just have to say again how much I love the new album. Awesome stuff. Also, Alannah thinks any song that includes the lyrics “You can publish your [findings] in a peer-reviewed journal” to be the greatest song ever written.

Brilliant. Do you guys have tabs? I want to learn to play it.

SOOT rocks! Very funny to hear songs name dropping the Royal New Zealand Navy and the University of Auckland. This album is definately more guitar oriented (I call it “Happy Metal”) than previous albums. Would this be the influence of Mario on the song writing process? “Nyarlathotep”: Wow. Toren I recall something from your blog about the Nyarlathotep lyrics being actual Egyption. Is this correct? Any chance you could post the lyrics (translated or not). Thanks again Castewar and thank you Toren and band for some new good music!

“Duuuuuuuuude. I just listened to the CD in the car. AWESOME. Man – you guys rock! It must have been so much fun to make! AND I got locked in the mess. Sweeeeeet.”

The new CD f*ckin’ kicks ass, guys! It was worth the wait, but don’t take so long to give us the next one!
Cthulhu lives!

Awesome new album guys!
“Some Things Man Was Not Meant to Know” is in the running for my new favorite TDotHT song

(this last one was from Kat Bolstad, who is Dr Steve “giant squid” O’Shea’s assistant. She and Steve are both killed in the song “Cultists on Board.”)

Yog! Sothoth!

You know, I kind of like our song “Yog-Sothoth” from way back in the 90’s. I guess somebody else feels the same way because they put it in their school video project.

There is a terrible secret about this musical track that I can only tell you about in person.

PS – so far I’ve sold ~ 20 copies of the album and given away about half that. All of the sales were for the Jun 14th pre-release and thus were mail orders, which I sent today, much to the chagrin of the four people in line behind me at the postal orifice. The clerk was a young guy who was really nice and actually picked 2 uncancelled stamps off one of my recycled envelopes and gave them back to me for reuse.

PS – for a lark, I looked up myface.com and spacebook.com. One of them is a real friend networking site.

Walkin' In A Graveyard

Many years ago I acted in the short film “Graveyard” by Ed Brisson, a little number about zombie bookstore clerks. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets was on the soundtrack, as was Thor, and Thor also acted in the film (as did D.O.A.’s Joey Shithead). As part of the deal, Ed did a music video for Thor. The idea was that various characters were auditioning to be Thor, so he got a bunch of people together in outrageous costumes to lipsynch to the tune. You can see several of my friends including Robin Bougie’s handpuppet pal, and also me in my blue gug costume.
