Family De-Union.

I’ve set aside this afternoon to sell stuff on ebay, so I’ll keep this short and boring.

Yesterday I was supposed to go to my family reunion in White Rock. The night before I made arrangements with my brother to pick me up at the King George skystrain station (the end of the line in Surrey) at about 3ish.

I was about 20 minutes late out the door, and the bus took about 20 minutes longer than I anticipated, so I was almost an hour late. Merrick is not there. He has a cell phone, but it’s long distance even from Surrey as he lives in Harrison, so I figure I’ll look around a bit before I call him. I walk around the adjacent parking lot. I think “maybe he got lost and doesn’t remember where the station is, or he went to the wrong one” so I go to the nearest intersection to get the address. The nearest intersection has no signs, so I go to the next one. I write it down on my hand. I come back and make a call. INSERT $1.95 TO COMPLETE THE CALL. I brought 50 cents in change beyond what I’d need to get back home on transit after the family reunion. I’ll get more change at the tiny convenience store inside the station. It’s closed. I spend my $2 that will get me home. I’ll just have to borrow it off of someone or find another store around here. When I call – it’s busy. I get my change back from the phone. I go back to the parking lot and read my book (Mike Nelson’s “Death Rat” – I couldn’t find “Sirens of Titan” before I left and I didn’t have time to dig around) for a few minutes. I go back and call again. Still busy.

Third time’s the charm:
“There was a big accident just outside of Chilliwack and they closed the highway,” Merrick says. “I tried to take the backroads but so is everyone else and it didn’t work out. Mom says that they just missed it.” He starts to tell me more about the accident but I know that I only have so much time for my $1.95 so I get to the point – “are you still coming?”
“No.”
“Can you try to call Mom and see if somebody else can come pick me up?”
“I’ll have to wait for her to call me back because I don’t have their number”
PLEASE INSERT TEN CENTS TO CONTINUE THIS CALL.
I don’t have a dime – I insert a quarter for another couple of minutes.
“OK well do your best. It’s 4:08 right now – I guess I’ll wait here until 5. If nobody comes I’ll just go home.”

I sit down and make good progress on my book. 5pm passes. I wait another 20 minutes just in case. Every time a car comes by I look closely to see if anyone I recognize the occupants. It’s been so long since I’ve seen most of my relatives that this is actually a concern. I walk over to a cab – “Can you give me an estimate on how much it would cost to get to the peace arch?”
“About $25” the cabbie has to confer with the three other cabbies in his car.
“OK thanks.” I wonder if Andria – the only person I know who lives in Surrey – would be willing to help me out if she’s available. Damn, I have her number in my phonebook at home, I haven’t written it down in my wallet yet. I’ll have to remember to do that when I get home. (I do.) Anyway she’s probably working or busy.

I use a bill to buy another transit transfer. The machine gives me change, so I decide to give Merrick another call. He hasn’t heard from anyone, but his cell phone has been flaky.

I get on the skytrain and go home.

When I get home I remember: Oh yeah! Anghold is having her Scrabble tournament tonight (which I didn’t plan on attending because of the reunion)! I call James – he’s already there. As you can imagine I don’t feel like getting back on the buses. More importantly, I’ve got bucketloads of work to do, so I stay home and do it.

Quack.

My memory is selective

Last night over dinner it came up how Angie’s sister Pam was my first girlfriend and Marlo was interested to learn about that. As it turns out, I learned quite a bit about it too, and Angie learned some as well. I won’t go into specifics but Ang and I had never traded details, so Marlo & Chris & Stewie got to hear Pam’s side (via Angie) and my side (via me). It wasn’t like a big argument or anything even remotely dramatic, but to me it was just interesting to hear a different perspective after all these years. On top of that Angie reminisced about how one time Warren and I were making fun of Pam behind her back and it made Angie cry. That’s sad and I don’t remember it. It’s true what you’ve heard – 19-year-old Toren can be a prick. Anyway now Pam is married and has a baby and I rarely see her and when I do we don’t really exchange words because we don’t really have anything in common besides our past. And that suits both of us, I reckon. I get to hear about her when Chris gets roped into this or that in-law family obligation and that is no less than I require to go about my life.

Worst Karaoke Awards

And the Gold Kara-NOT-Okay Award goes to Elliot, the guy who “sang” Joe Cocker’s “I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends” with his back to the audience. Silver goes to the crotch-grabbing “Dork” hatted fellow whose “Bohemian Rhapsody” made me wish my water was antifreeze.

Yes, for Marlo’s birthday party the whole gang gathered at The Dufferin for some good new-fashioned karaoke. You’ll read the blogs of Janet, Yvonne and Marlo to learn more, but on my end I’ll mention that I sang “Fernando” with Angie, and “I Ran So Far Away” by Flock of Seagulls and “Daniel” by special request of Marlo. (Also there was delicious cake courtesy Janet & Yvonne, and delicious Denny’s courtesy of Sid ‘n’ Ang)

Next time I have my eye on some Monkees. Everyone (not everyone, but you know) does Frank Sinatra – and I might too. Maybe somebody (Marlo? Sid?) could make me a Sinatra CD? Also, I’ve got to find out who does “I learned the truth at 17 that love was made for beauty queens….”

Lurkers

I got an email last night from Bob saying that Andrew Migliore was coming up from Portland. Andrew puts on the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival every year and as the honcho (head ~) of Lurker Films he puts out DVDs of the various indie films he screens. Volume 3 contains two of Bob’s films: From Beyond and The Terrible Old Man. Bob asked if I would be interested in being interviewed. Even though I had only a very little role in the making of these particular films, Andrew asked me a bunch of questions about Lovecraft and The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets and all that stuff, so maybe I’ll appear on the DVD’s special features. That was fun. Hopefully I won’t come across as a git. Also I got fed pizza.

In other “showbiz” news – who has heard of the cardboard tube samurai? I don’t know how much I can say about this, but I’m involved in something exciting from the Penny Arcade guys.

Nolympics

I saw the other day the cover of the papers read that the Olympic pooh bahs “warn” Canada to put more money into sports/athletics. I have a better front page: Toren warns Canada to put more money into health care, public transportation and environmental programs.

Blood and free stuff

So I have a family reunion this Saturday afternoon. Anyone feel like spending the day with me and my wacky family? Mom says: “White Rock, Legion Camp Ground, 16327 Beach Road, Surrey, and it is just before the border, turn off just before Peach Arch Park. If you can come with a couple of friends, who can drive you, that would be great, there is more than enough food, so a couple of friends would be no problem. Saturday, Sept 4, 1 pm until whenever. Dinner is a roast beef by Uncle Harry this time, plus probably fresh corn from Chilliwack, all kinds of side dishes and goodies.”

Also this looks exciting:

Announcing the Fun and Fancy Free Store, September 6th, Grandview Park 11am-6pm. as part of the PlayBour Day/Fun For Free day organised by MOMpops (Momentum Magazine pop-up parties) (http://www.momentummagazine.com/mompop.html) in association with The Work Less Party (http://www.worklessparty.org/), with support from PedalPlay (http://www.pedalpower.org/)

WHAT: A free store: like a garage sale with the lowest prices you’ve ever seen — everything is for free!
WHERE: Grandview Park, Commercial Drive @ Charles St., Vancouver.
WHEN: Monday, September 6th, 2004 (Labour Day), 11am-6pm, rain or shine!
WHY: Because we all have a lot to share!

The Fun and Fancy Free Store is currently accepting donations! If you have new or good-quality used goods or items that are collecting too much dust, consider giving them away at the one-day free store! All items need to
get to the event between 10:00am and 2:00pm the day-of, of their own accord, unless prior arrangements are made with the organisers. You may also arrange to pick up any un-given goods of yours at the end of the event, along with your very own thank you card! Leftover items will be donated to charities that do pick-ups. Please no junk-dumping (you know what I mean!) and no resellers. Volunteers and donors welcome the day-of to ‘person’ the store checkout, chat, and have a generally good time while enjoying the other MOMpops activities and entertainment.

If you are thinking of donating items, please let us know ahead of time and give us an idea of what you might be bringing: We would like to be able to set up enough table and ground space to accommodate everyone.

** We are still looking to borrow tarps and rope (to hang from trees as cover in the event of rain). Also, if you have a good idea for renting / borrowing a few tables and/or ground sheets (for the store items), please let us know ASAP. **

Con-Genital

I just spent the entire weekend running a gaming con. It was fun but I’m very drained. I’ll have stories to tell, but later. Thanks Stewie for buying me Chinese food for dinner to put that spring back in my step.
