Is the legend of the Kraken, a tentacled beast as large as a whale, based on myth or a real creature? Take an expedition to the Sea of Cortez, Mexico where fishermen regularly claim to encounter large schools of giant squid. Watch as squid expert Scott Cassel uses lures with built-in cameras in an attempt to video a Kraken-sized squid 1,000 feet below the ocean. What Cassel and his team discover will make history. One-part history, one-part science and one part monster, discover the truth behind legendary creatures.

The Million Favoured Ones…

Toren,

I’m a relatively new but huge fan of the Thickets! I listen to your albums over and over again while I am at work. It’s the only thing that keeps me (in)sane while on the job!

Anyway I just got my hands on “The Shadow Out of Tim” and I’m really enjoying the new album but I’m really curious what the non-traditional instrument is that you guys use in some of the songs? Since I purchased a digital copy from Amazon I did not receive any sort of liner notes. I hear the instrument on Cultist on Board, Nyarlathotep, and possibly a couple others I’m not thinking of right now. At first I thought it might be an accordion or maybe a sitar but now I am leaning towards possibly a Hurdy Gurdy. Anyway I would really love to find out what it is you used even it if it’s just a fancy synthesizer 🙂

In Cthulhu’s Name,
John S. Brown

Hey John Brown, did you know that there is an excellent song by The Masters of Reality that shares your name? I digress. The instrument you are hearing is called a melodica. As wikipedia tells us, a melodica is a free-reed instrument similar to the accordion and harmonica. It has a musical keyboard on top, and is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument. Pressing a key opens a hole, allowing air to flow through a reed. The keyboard is usually two or three octaves long.

The melodica I have was handed down to me from my father, and I don’t actually know how to play it. Like all musical instruments, I just kind of fake it, learning only enough to look cool. Case in point:

Google Sucks for Some Things

…like trying to figure out what is going on in Vancouver for the Chinese New Year. Anyone know anything?

Meantime, here’s a drawing I did that didn’t make the cut for Cults of Freeport:

2008 Saturday Morning Cartoon Party

So this evening I went over to Mike’s place, which is to say my new place. I am officially living in two houses right now. I decided rather than stress over one or two days of moving I’d just pay rent for both places for the month and stretch moving over a couple of weeks. Still looking for help if you’ve got days free after the 12th and some kind of a vehicle.

The exciting bit is that Mike & Alannah are keen for the 2008 Saturday Morning Cartoon Party, which I imagine will happen some day in March, but not on the 1st and not on the 29th. So if you want to join us speak up if you have availability issues for certain Saturday mornings/afternoons. They have a nice big ADHD televisor set and it’s a fair sized room. If anyone visits the states in between now and then bring me up a box of Peanut Butter Capn’ Crunch!

I guess I’m a lot more anxious about moving than I am about acting in a film, since over the past week I’ve had multiple moving dreams and only one in anticipation of today’s scene.

Any advice for a fellow who wants a new bed but doesn’t have a car/truck? My bed’s going to be too big for my new room since I’m gonna put my work space in there too.

For Some Unsuspicious Reason…

Usually when the blogs are this sparse it means one of 3 things:

1. I’m touring across the country with the band.
2. I’ve got a lot of things on the go.
3. Nothing interesting is happening.

In this case it’s #2. Definitely NOT #3 because there is a very interesting human female (NOT a robot) that I am spending time with and I am pretty stoked about that. Is it okay to say ‘stoked?’ Do the kids still say that or is it outmoded? If outmoded, replace with ‘aroused.’

But I won’t give too much away, always leave with a cliffhanger….

Alternately, always leave with a hilarious photograph:

Moving Again

Some time in mid February I’d like to begin moving my stuff in earnest, over a two week period. If anyone wants to help I’ll be your best friend. Very few steps! And if anyone has a truck that can move a couch and a shelves and a desk, that would be great. Otherwise I’ll just hire movers. I wonder if they charge by the day or the hour?

Here’s the new place:
