Heroes and Anti-Heroes

Okay – I was excited about The Incredibles when I saw the teaser. Now I’ve seen the trailer, and I’m 10x as excited.

The bad news is, as many of you know, Keanu Reeves is playing John Constantine. This film is based on the comic series Hellblazer – about a guy who is tangled up in the occult. The comic is supposed to be good and I have never got around to reading it (I don’t think I know anybody who has any issues), and it is depressing to think that first exposure to many people is going to be this abomination. I can’t think of worse casting choices. Seriously – they could have cast Carrot Top and I would be more interested in seeing the film.

  1. When Karen Berger of Vertigo (the “adult” line of comics form DC) announced that Canoe was playing Constantine to a packed panel room at the San Diego Comic Con last year, there was a huge collective groan.

Karen shrugged and hinted that she (and Vertigo) had nothing to do with it.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is great, fluffy fun, and either a rip off or an homage to pulps of the 30’s and 40’s. The movie features the actors (Jude Law, Gwenyth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie) acting against blue screen sets. I’d say 95% of everything you see (aside from the actors, their clothes, and any props) are CG created. Oftentimes it looks just like a video game. Kirsten and I enjoyed it, but, like most Hollywood movies, what actually happened is mostly forgettable after you walk out of the theater.

  2. Please don’t underestimate the acting ability of Carrot Top.
I think this would all be more devastating if it was Steven Harper playing the role of John Constantine.

  3. Oh yeah – now I know where I recognize the name. Here I was trying to find him on imdb – bunch of NOBODIES!
