Gaming Stuff Aplenty

Today I met with a fellow from a video game college who is looking for people to volunteer to run some roleplaying and strategy games for his students. I volunteered, not only because it will be fun, but I’ll get to introduce Spaceship Zero to some new people and also it will promote the VGG.

This evening we played Freeport D&D (as opposed to Terak D&D with Michelle & Anghold et al). Geoffrey couldn’t make it because he’s working on Smallville, but Marlo stepped in with Fyarl, her half-ogre fighter. They’re storming a temple to Tharizdun and both Fyarl and Nigel (James’ cleric) could have easily been disintegrated if they had failed their dice rolls. It was an exciting scenario filled with combat, and there was some hilarious parleying between the two members of the party who could speak giant (Marlo and Norm each play half-ogres) and an ogre cook who’s working for the cult. Jonathan kept butting in not knowing what was being said and undermining Norm’s bluff attempts, and the ogre himself tried to bluff the group. In the end they decided to leave peaceably (peacibly?), which left the ogre to sound the alarm.

One of the cool things about being an illustrator for D&D is that occasionally you get illo descriptions that simply call for some generic adventurer reacting to the subject of the drawing. In these cases, I try to slip in characters from various games I’m involved in. So, I kind of get paid to draw the characters in the campaign. Paul plays in our Wednesday girly game (he’s the only guy in the group besides myself) and his wizard is named Zo. He’s the first one to get a drawing, fighting some pesky poultergeist. The finished drawing is here http://members.shaw.ca/tatkinso0/zo.jpg

I also created a new character for the Legacy of the Green Regent campaign that I am in with James, Norm, Chris Woods, Chris Slater and Kathryn (Jon Dawes DMs). Since half the party died during the last adventure, I made up a halfling monk/sorcerer named Exeter to replace good old Metathorax. His strength is negligible, so most of his damage will come from special effects like stunning fist or karate chops enhanced with spells like “chill touch.” Should be lots of fun, even though I’ll probably only have one or two decent hits in me before I’m powered out. I am using a funky little miniature of a small guy completely covered in an executioner-type hood and robes, that Anghold painted at the last miniature painting party. I’ll try him out on Sunday and see how it goes.

Lastly, bolstered by Marlo’s suggestion, I applied to be a reviewer for an animation website. If I’m very lucky, I’ll be accepted and I’ll be getting pre-release DVDs etc of cartoons like Justice League & X-Men: Evolution etc etc. I actually do have some experience writing reviews – I did movie reviews for two separate magazines/papers in Vancouver over the past 5-6 years. So, wish me skill.

This morning I had a dream of shooting dozens of people in the head and stomach with lots of guns. Then Ricardo Montalban came through and I couldn’t shoot him. He came up to me and grabbed my spare tire and squeezed in a friendly, old uncle, but still very painful, way.

Can someone check their dream analysis dictionary for what Ricardo Montalban symbolizes? I just have to know.

I submitted my first question to Okcupid, thus:

Would you support your spouse/partner even if you didn’t agree with him/her?

a) Only if it is a small issue
b) Always. That’s what marriage/partnership is about
c) Nah. Marriage doesn’t necessarily mean we have to act as one
d) Never. That’s the worst kind of compromise

How would you answer? In my last big relationship, this came up as an issue. I guess I was and am of the opinion that the best kind of union doesn’t require any of kind of compromise of individuality–that two people are never going to agree on everything so why should you have to accept that you pretend to like X or hate Y or whatever. Instead you should accept the fact that you can agree to disagree and work around that, and still be in love and be happy. The other side of the issue was that a relationship is all about compromise and support, and that I should support what she said and did. That seems kind of ridiculous to me, and when it was brought up that she supported everything that I said and did, it still seemed ridiculous – to do that for the sake of a relationship. I don’t want that. And yet I notice from time to time that this sort of things happens in the relationships around me. One half of the relationship will say one thing, and it’s anathema for the other half to contradict or challenge what was said or done. You can see them standing there quietly keeping their peace, decidedly not saying what’s on their mind. That’s the kind of behaviour I would expect from two people who don’t know eachother very well, and are just being polite. The old “don’t contradict me in front of the neighbors/children/klingons” seems terribly outdated to me. I would never expect my girlfriend to be my yes-man. If I say or do something that is wrong, by all means call me on it. Better than pretending everything is fine when it isn’t.

Of course there are always exceptions.

And maybe that’s why I’m still single!

I read on imdb.com that Sam Rockwell, who is one of my favourite actors, is playing Zaphod Beeblebrox in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie. That, sir or madam, is very exciting. I hope they use the music from the original tv series because…well, I guess because it’s in my head right now.

Who are my favourite actors besides Sam Rockwell? Bill Murray (everything). John Turturro (especially Barton Fink, Box of Moonlight with Sam Rockwell). Ian Holm (Brazil, Joe Gould’s Secret, Madness of King George, Alien). Julianne Moore (especially Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Big Lebowski. She was the only saving grace of Far From Heaven. She was in a Lovecraftian movie called Cast A Deadly Spell). Alfred Molina (The Impostors, Chocolat. He’s playing Dr. Octopus in Spider-Man 2 – also very exciting). Tony Shalhoub (The Big Night, Galaxy Quest, and a tv series called Monk). Sigourney Weaver (everything). I also like Kevin Spacey, Johnny Depp and Stanley Tucci. And Miranda Otto really took me by surprise in The Two Towers. Oh and Bruce Campbell…for obvious reasons.

Interesting news snippets from last week: President Bush’s Council of Economic Advisors decided to move the official start date of the last recession from the generally accepted March 2001 to the fourth quarter of 2000, when Bill Clinton was still president. Scientists found that people are more likely to tell lies when using the telephone. Colin Powell said that the conquest of Iraq was justified because Saddam Hussein would have used weapons of mass destruction if only he had had some. An internal Pentagon report warned that global climate “should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a U.S. national security concern.” Pakistan was preparing for a spring offensive against the Taliban, which was handing out fliers in Afghanistan warning people that they will be killed if they register to vote. Homosexuals were lining up to get married in San Francisco; [New York Times] Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered the California attorney general to put a stop to it, and declared that the city was becoming a “risk to civil order.” A black hole was observed eating a star, and astronomers found a crystal the size of our moon in the heart of a dying white dwarf.

Mmm..snippets!

Speaking of movies, here’s my “movies I haven’t seen and want to see” list, sometimes listed with year, actor or director, from whence comes the recommendation, and the imdb rating out of 10. NAR stands for Not At Rogers (by my home). Have a look! Leave some comments! Loan me your copy if you have one! Suggest others!

Argh. So my voiceover agent has asked that I provide a “sexy” voiceover for my commercial voiceover demo reel. Right now I’ve got a funny, quirky one with BCAA tips, a serious, gentle one about the Canadian Cancer Society, and a fast, exciting Battle Bots commercial. She has asked for something “mellow
smooth maybe touching on romantic soft caring as well as a deep voice”, specifically. I’m wracking my brains as to what product I could do. Apparently Snapple did a sort of erotic ad campaign some time ago but I don’t know when and I can’t find any transcripts of the ads. I got this:

“It’s time we had ‘The Talk.’ At Snapple, when young fruits ripen, they may want to combine with other fruits. These urges are perfectly natural. So experiment. Explore. Even play the field. When fruits join together, it’s a very special thing.”

Which is kind of close, but I hope to find something better. Maybe a jazz radio spot, or a promo for tourism to Greece or something. Any suggestions would be keen. I go in to record tomorrow afternoon.

Both Pixies shows sold out in 3 minutes.

During a tennis game with James, we witnessed a car accident on the corner of 12th & Oak. I screwed up my shot and talked my way into a “do-over.” So, one person’s horrible car accident is another person’s tennis boon.

Out of the purple Ang Hold asked me to drive her mom’s car when we went to see Triplets of Belleville. So I proved to her and Dalia that yes, I really could drive a car. Triplets, by the way, wasn’t as good as I’d anticipated. I give it a 7 out of 10. It was very well executed but the story itself didn’t really grab me.

Wouldn’ t you agree?

This year was the 7th. I think there were less attendees than usual this year, but that’s fine because it meant everyone had a place to sit. Every year I buy too much cereal, so every year I convince myself to get less cereal. But when I go to the store, I’m always second-guessing that the worst possible scenario will happen – we’ll run out of cereal and people will go hungry.

That has never happened.

People brought cereal too (thanks!) and I’m left with boxes of Count Chocula, Cookie Crisp, Froot Loops, Scooby Doo Cereal, Cap’n Crunch, Honeycomb, Reese Puffs, Alpha Bits, Golden Grahams, Oreo O’s, Trix, Lucky Charms and Nesquik. I guess I know what’s going to be for snacks on D&D night this week.

Here was the lineup. Running times were typically about 20 minutes late. Not sure why that was. The theme this year was “Double Trouble” Doppelgangers, Clones & Impostors (last year it was the supernatural, in 2002 it was “secret origins” and in 2001 it was robots. I’m not sure if there were themes before that.

9:00 Star Trek The Animated Series – In “The Survivor”, the Enterprise discovers a ship manned by Carter Winston (voiced by Ted Knight) who has been missing for five years. Winston turns out to be a Vendorian shape-shifter who takes Kirk’s place and orders the Enterprise to violate Romulan space. 1973 Best moment: Kathryn asking what was going on.

9:25 Dungeons and Dragons – Doppelgangers hinder the heroes’ quest to find the foot of the yellow dragon in “The Garden of Zinn.” Happy Days’ Donny Most (Ralph Malph) voices Eric the cavalier 1983. Best moment: all of the Dungeon Master jokes directed at me.

9:25 Jonny Quest – Dr Zin trains an impostor of Race Bannon to steal plans from Dr Quest in “Double Danger” 1964 Best moment: Jonny and Hadji lying in bed together shirtless saying “I’ve got a strange feeling.”

9:50 Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot In “1000 Fingers of Rusty” Quark Industries releases a home version of Rusty. M. Emmett Walsh as Mack, R. Lee Ermey as General Thornton, Clancy Brown as Legion Ex Machina 1999. Best moment: Not sure…all of the wanton destruction, maybe?

10:15: Superfriends Humankind is transformed into copies of Cheetah and Bizarro in “Wanted: The Superfriends” 1978. Best moment: The whole freaking episode was wiggidy whack – realizing that the Legion of Doom had turned everyone in the world into their slaves, and still they had them commit robberies – against eachother.

10:40 Bugs Bunny “Tortoise Beats Hare” 1941. Best moment: Goddamn Bugs Bunny is amazing. It still holds up after all these years and makes all the knock-offs look like total crap.

10:50 Harvey Birdman, Attorney-at-Law “Bannon Custody Case” 2002. Best moment: This whole episode was basically a sendup of the Dr. Zin creating a duplicate or Race Bannon, so there were lots of yuks all around.

11:00 A Superman impostor robs Metropolis in “Showdown” 1941. Best moment: I just like the fact that in the 40’s Superman couldn’t fly, he could only jump really high. And his strength was only moderate, comparatively, and he didn’t have heat vision or freeze breath or all that other jazz.

11:10 Superman: The Animated Series. Lex Luthor creates a clone of Superman in “Identity Crisis” Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor 1997. Best moment: Marlo empathizing with Bizarro.

11:35 The Ripping Friends pose as Manman and Boyboy in order to catch Manman and Boyboy in “Manman and Boyboy” 2001. Best moment: Kathryn actually being unable to watch the last 10 minutes of the show because it was just too icky.

12:00 At a superhero nightclub, The Tick must fight to keep his name in “The Tick vs The Tick” 1994. Best moment: “I’m the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at…HEY! PAY ATTENTION!”

12:25 Futurama Professor Farnsworth creates a box to a parallel universe in “Farnsworth’s Parabox” 2003. Best moment: Everything Zoidberg says.

12:50 Sealab 2021 “Lost in Time” Patching illegally into cable creates a subspace fracture that sends Quinn and Stormy back in time to repeat the same mistake over and over again and also creating infinite duplicates. 2003. Best moment: “I said it’s dodgeball time, bitch!”

1:00 Criminals impersonate The Powerpuff Girls in “Powerpuff Bluff” 1998. Best moment: I was getting the tires in my bike inflated during this one, so I missed it.

1:10 A Spider-Man impersonator commits crimes in “Double Identity.” 1968. Best moment: everyone being burned out from sugary cereals.

1:25 Clone High “Litter Kills – Litterally.” One of the clones you’ve come to know and love is horribly killed. Luke Perry as Ponce de Leon 2003. Best moment: everyone getting their second wind.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force “The Mooninites” for good measure 2003. Best moment: the quad-laser. The bullet is enormous. There is no escape.

Samurai Jack must battle an evil doppelganger of himself in “Jack vs Mad Jack” 2001. Best moment: Slater & Kathryn being just so damn excited to see Samurai Jack. This was not nearly my favourite episode. Next year I’d like to show Jack vs the Ultra Robots (which is my favourite).

I ended up not showing the Justice League and Freakazoid episodes I planned on. Everyone seemed cartooned out by 2pm. Mental note for next year. No wait, not mental – physical.

Thanks to everyone who came – I hope you had fun fun fun. Following the party there was a semi-impromptu bike ride consisting of myself and Marlo. We biked downtown and around the seawall and it was very nice. Too many people though, getting in our way. I was worried my bike was going to disintegrate, having not ridden it in probably 5 years. Worked out fine though and I think I may have almost worked off all of the calories from the compounded bowls of cereal!
